Where does Yetur Gross-Matos fit at the next level?

Highlights lie. I was able to get through film of one game, Penn State vs Maryland 2018, before seeing enough for one sitting. After a bit, I decided to watch more film. I watched the 2018 match up against Iowa, and was again, underwhelmed by a player some seem to be enamored by. In the tape, I saw a player that struggled to shed blocks against linemen and tight ends and move the pocket to create problems for the quarterback consistently.

I specifically remember a play against Iowa in which Gross-Matos was pushed back seven yards by Lions first round selection, TJ Hockenson, and it was very painful to watch. I have not really noticed an ability for Gross-Matos to shed blocks consistently because of a limited arsenal of pass rush moves, limited bend, and inconsistent burst.

However, one thing does stick out to me, Yetur Gross-Matos is very aware of where the ball is on the field. This is a trait that cannot be taught. Teaching players pass rush moves, shedding blocks, and proper footwork to maintain balance and power during engagements. So, where does this leave Yetur Gross-Matos this season in terms of his draft stock?

To me, the outlook on this player is up in the air. The 6-5, 265 pound defensive end has a frame that scouts love as a strong end that could help move the pocket, however his play can be very sloppy in his technique and limited ability to consistently push blocks and shed blocks to disrupt the pass and run game should be a major concern for teams regardless of his ideal size for the position.

Whether the problem lies in the coaching or in Gross-Matos’ ability to develop, To be successful at the next level, he needs to show that he can create consistent pressure in both the passing game and run game. I do not believe at this point, other teams fear him as a player because of his poor technique. However, the pass rush move that he relies on heavily is the spin move, making him very predictable for other teams to prepare for.
